When is Memorial Day 2022
Memorial Day is always celebrated on the last Monday of May, so this year, Memorial Day is May 30th. For decades, Memorial Day continued to be observed on May 30, but in 1968, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which established Memorial Day as the last Monday in May in order to create a three-day weekend for ferderal employees.
What is the history behind Memorial Day?
Memorial Day, as Decoration Day gradually came to be known, originally honored only those lost while fighting in the Civil War. But during World War I the United States found itself embroiled in another major conflict, and the holiday evolved to commemorate American military personnel who died in all wars, including World War II, The Vietnam War, The Korean War and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Evolution of Memorial Day
Let's go back to the fact that due to Memorial Day, federal employees have an extra day in their weekend at the gates of summer. A day off means time off, getting out, going for walks, traveling, shopping and enjoying the change of weather to a warmer and more appetizing one to do all those outdoor activities we love. It was for this reason that a day of commemoration and remembrance of the fallen, became a nostalgic but also a happy day for many.
